The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations held a press conference yesterday, January 30, 2024, to discuss the details of the dismantling of a terrorist cell in Had Soualem. The bureau emphasized that the terrorist threat remains persistent and is evolving through new methods targeting national security and stability.
The bureau officials noted that extremist groups are increasingly relying on recruiting individuals from their immediate family environments, making the recruitment process more complex and dangerous.
They also highlighted that social media platforms have become fertile ground for spreading extremist ideologies, with such platforms being used to lure youth and minors into the grip of terrorism. Moreover, they confirmed that Morocco is facing a growing terrorist threat, fueled by areas of instability in different parts of the world. Many Moroccans, including minors, have joined extremist groups, presenting increasingly serious security challenges.
In related developments, the security agencies warned against the dangers of questioning the dismantling of terrorist cells, stressing that such skepticism serves extremist groups and undermines public trust in security efforts, which could negatively impact the country’s stability. The press conference also underscored that Morocco’s experience in combating terrorism has become an internationally recognized model, thanks to the continuous efforts of the competent authorities.
Despite the active role of security agencies, the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations emphasized that combating extremism is not solely the responsibility of security forces. It requires a collective engagement from various actors, including religious institutions, media, and civil society, to address the root causes of extremist ideologies. The bureau also commended the significant advancements in security communication strategies, noting that both the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) and the Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) have reached unprecedented levels of professionalism in educating the public.
The bureau confirmed that the security personnel working in counter-terrorism operations possess high levels of skill and specialization, dispelling the stereotypical image of the traditional security officer. This enhances Morocco’s ability to effectively tackle evolving terrorist threats.
The conference concluded with a reaffirmation that Morocco will remain a stronghold against terrorism, thanks to the vigilance of its security forces and the cooperation of its citizens, amidst growing regional and international challenges.
