Police Magazine Highlights Role of Trained Dogs in Morocco’s Security System

In its December 2024 issue, Police Magazine, published by the General Directorate of National Security, focused on the crucial role of trained dogs in the country’s security operations under the title: “Trained Police Dogs… Loyalty and Effectiveness in Security Work.”

The magazine’s editorial in issue 53 emphasized that trained dogs have become an indispensable part of security operations in Morocco. These dogs are relied upon for securing major events, monitoring borders, searching for missing persons, and intervening in hazardous situations. With their high-level efficiency, they play a vital role in detecting drugs, smuggled currencies, and explosives, making them strategic partners for security forces.

The magazine also highlighted the General Directorate of National Security’s efforts to enhance this field by introducing new breeds of trained dogs and expanding their roles to include advanced tasks such as detecting counterfeit currency and searching for bodies.

The history of the National Center for Training Police Dogs dates back to 1992, when it was established as an organizational framework to train and qualify handlers for security tasks involving dogs. In 2016, a significant development took place with the creation of the K9 Technical Police Section under the Judicial Police Directorate, which unified the efforts of technical police units and expanded their scope of action to cover various security sectors, including border control and law enforcement interventions.

Recognizing the importance of this specialty in addressing future security challenges, the General Directorate of National Security launched an ambitious project to expand K9 units by deploying specialized teams to more urban centers and enhancing human resources by increasing the number of trainers and veterinarians. Additionally, the directorate plans to integrate new breeds of trained dogs to ensure maximum effectiveness in securing major events that Morocco will host in the near future.

The latest issue of Police Magazine also features an in-depth report titled “K9 Police… A Specialized Force Under the Microscope,” which covers the historical milestones of this field, key reforms, and a comprehensive analysis of the organizational structure and decentralization of specialized teams. The magazine also highlights the role of women in this field with a special report on the contribution of female officers to K9 operations.

In the Inside section, the magazine reviewed the major achievements of the National Security in 2024, including the update of the National ID Card (CNIE 2.0), the development of the digital space for security services, and the strengthening of community policing through infrastructure upgrades. The magazine also presented statistics showing a continued rise in deterrence and a decline in violent crime.

On the international front, the magazine noted Morocco’s growing role as a strategic partner in global security, citing new memorandums of understanding with various countries and international security organizations. This reflects the prominent position of Morocco’s security system on the global stage.
