During a public session in the House of Representatives earlier this week, Minister of Education, Sports, and Youth, Mohamed Said Barada, highlighted the achievements of the “Pioneering Schools” initiative. He emphasized that this project represents a transformative reform aimed at improving education quality and addressing the challenges facing Morocco’s educational system.
The minister noted that the project focuses on enhancing competencies in core subjects such as Arabic, French, and mathematics. This approach responds to statistics showing that many primary school students struggle with reading, arithmetic, and language comprehension.
The initiative employs an innovative methodology that begins with a comprehensive assessment of each student’s level at the start of the school year. This allows for organizing classrooms based on students’ needs, ensuring tailored instruction. National evaluations are conducted every six weeks to monitor progress and improve educational outcomes. According to the minister, this approach has delivered tangible results, with correct answer rates in Pioneering Schools rising to 60%, compared to just 40% in traditional schools—an impressive 50% improvement in less than six months.
The minister announced the expansion of the project to include 2,000 schools this year, benefiting over 1.3 million students. A similar pilot program is also being implemented in 230 middle schools, focusing on scientific subjects such as physics, chemistry, and earth sciences. The project also aims to reduce dropout rates, as approximately 160,000 students leave middle schools annually without completing their education. To address this issue, the “Second Chance School” initiative has been launched to provide vocational or technical training, enabling these students to enter the job market with suitable qualifications.
In his closing remarks, the minister stressed that the pedagogical reforms have yielded promising results, positioning Morocco as a leader in education reform at the international level. He underscored the importance of scaling up this successful model to all educational institutions, aiming to establish an efficient and sustainable education system that serves future generations.
