Severe Cold Wave Hits Morocco: Causes and Effects

Morocco is currently experiencing a period of extreme cold, with temperatures dropping to -08°C. This cold wave, which extends from Wednesday to Saturday, is the result of the influence of a low-pressure system located in the Mediterranean basin, accompanied by cold and polar air masses, as explained by Houcine Youabed, the communication officer at the Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM).

Forecasts indicate that temperatures will range between -08°C and 09°C in several regions, with snowfall expected at elevations exceeding 1,400 meters. The most affected areas include the High and Middle Atlas, the Rif region, and the southeast of the country, where localized frost is also anticipated. Minimum temperatures are expected to range from -8°C to -1°C in mountainous areas, while along the coasts and in other regions, they will range from 6°C to 13°C.

The Directorate General of Meteorology has issued an “orange” alert bulletin to warn residents of the severe weather conditions. The forecasts also indicate light rain in some areas of the High and Middle Atlas, in addition to significant snowfall on the peaks, particularly around Ifrane and Taza. This weather situation comes amid a stark contrast with the high temperatures recorded in previous months, making this cold wave particularly felt by the population.
