The 39th National Architect Day in Fes: Architects at the Heart of Environmental Challenges

On Tuesday, January 14, the city of Fes hosted the 39th National Architect Day, organized by the National Council of Architects in partnership with the Ministry of National Territory Planning, Urbanism, Housing, and Urban Policy. This significant event brought together architects, experts, and decision-makers to address pressing issues, particularly global concerns surrounding energy and water crises.

This year’s event focused on the critical role architects play in tackling environmental challenges, especially in the face of climate change that directly impacts natural resource consumption. Various presentations highlighted innovative and practical solutions where architects can enhance water and energy efficiency in construction projects, with an emphasis on promoting sustainability in urban and rural developments.

Participants shared studies underscoring the necessity of adopting sustainable construction techniques and using locally sourced materials that reduce environmental impact and save energy. Discussions also emphasized creating infrastructure that respects the unique characteristics of each region, utilizing local materials to curb excessive resource consumption.

During her address, Ms. Hanan, Secretary General of the National Council of Architects, stated that architects are pivotal in crafting environmental solutions through innovative and sustainable urban projects. She noted that this year’s edition coincided with the anniversary of the late King Hassan II’s 1986 speech, which outlined a roadmap for architects. She affirmed that King Mohammed VI continues to advocate for sustainable infrastructure development as a cornerstone of national progress.

Ms. Hanan added that environmental challenges, particularly water scarcity and rising temperatures, necessitate collective thinking among architects, citizens, and the government to develop effective solutions. She stressed that architects are not merely designers but partners in safeguarding natural resources and advancing environmentally conscious construction methods.

The event also highlighted the role of architects in optimizing water usage, especially in agriculture, through advanced irrigation systems like drip irrigation. Moreover, discussions spotlighted sustainable building solutions for rural areas, emphasizing the use of local materials such as clay and stone to reduce environmental and financial costs.

The conference concluded with a call for architects to continue their commitment to developing innovative and sustainable urban projects. The recommendations aim to translate discussions into actionable projects that contribute to Morocco’s broader vision for sustainable development.
