Two Palestinian sources close to the negotiations led by Hamas for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip stated on Tuesday to AFP that approximately 1,000 Palestinian prisoners are expected to be released during the first phase of a ceasefire agreement in exchange for 33 hostages.
“Israel will release about 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, including several sentenced to lengthy prison terms,” one of the sources within the Palestinian Islamist movement said.
“Several hundred terrorists will be released, but I cannot provide specific numbers as it depends on how many of the 33 hostages are alive,” an Israeli government official mentioned regarding the first phase of the ongoing ceasefire discussions.
After months of unsuccessful attempts to secure a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel accompanied by an exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners, mediation efforts by Egypt, the United States, and Qatar appear to be progressing well.
“There has been real progress over the past two days,” said the Israeli official. “This time, we can hope for good news; we are close to the goal, but not there yet.”
Israel will “not leave Gaza until all hostages are returned, both living and deceased,” he added, clarifying that this is not about a permanent ceasefire but a temporary one.
