Two Chinese Factories Worth 6 Billion Dirhams Under Construction in Tangier

A subsidiary of the industrial conglomerate China Baoan Group is building two factories in Tangier, which are set to become operational by 2026 and will create over 1,100 highly skilled jobs.

The construction projects by BTR New Material, a global leader in the production of cathodes and anodes for electric batteries, are progressing well. During a meeting held in Rabat on Tuesday, January 7, Minister Delegate for Investment, Convergence, and Public Policy Evaluation Karim Zidane discussed the status of the cathode production unit, which is slated to begin operations in early 2024. The meeting also covered BTR’s second project involving the construction of an anode factory within the Mohammed VI Tangier Tech City.

Discussions indicated that both factories are expected to be completed by 2026. According to the minister, the operational implementation of these projects will contribute to establishing a complete value chain for electric mobility within the kingdom. These initiatives represent a total investment of over 6 billion dirhams and will generate more than 1,100 highly skilled jobs. During this meeting, Zidane and Yang Shuzhan reaffirmed their shared commitment to making Morocco a strategic hub for electric battery technologies.

Why choose Morocco? The kingdom has deposits of several minerals essential for producing electric vehicle batteries, such as cobalt, phosphate, and lithium. Morocco offers a favorable environment in terms of modern infrastructure, industrial integration, and commitment to energy transition. Another advantage is its proximity to the European market.
