Morocco Expands Industrial Zones: Minister Riad Mezzour Outlines Progress and Challenges

During a session of the House of Councillors, Minister of Industry and Trade, Riad Mezzour, provided an update on the development of industrial zones across Morocco. He revealed that the total industrial land area has grown from approximately 10,000 hectares to 13,600 hectares, marking an increase of over 37% compared to the progress achieved in the past 24 years. The government is also in the process of adding another 2,475 hectares, with an additional 3,886 hectares planned for future development.

Mezzour emphasized the government’s commitment to establishing an industrial zone in every province, addressing land shortages in most areas. However, challenges persist in regions such as Ifrane and El Hajeb. While suitable land has been identified for El Hajeb, efforts are ongoing to secure appropriate land for Ifrane.

The minister acknowledged difficulties in accessing industrial land, citing unresolved project locations due to complex laws and procedures. He called for expedited licensing processes, particularly in areas where agricultural lands overlap with industrial needs.

Mezzour also highlighted the environmental sustainability of new industrial zones. These zones will feature modern infrastructure, including clean energy systems, water treatment facilities, and essential services. Additionally, child care facilities will be introduced to support working women.

Regarding redevelopment, the government is restructuring 500 hectares of existing industrial land, with plans to overhaul an additional 1,500 hectares during the current administration. This initiative aims to reduce land speculation, which often hampers investment opportunities.

In conclusion, Mezzour affirmed that these measures would position Morocco as an attractive destination for industrial investments, bolstering the national economy while aligning with sustainable development goals and regional equity.
