The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration has announced the confirmation of 41 cases of measles, known locally as “Bouhamron,” as of Wednesday, January 8, 2025. These cases are distributed across several correctional facilities, with the Tangier 2 local prison being the most affected, reporting 23 cases, including two among staff members.
In an urgent response to this outbreak, the delegation has implemented immediate measures to isolate the infected individuals and provide them with treatment and medical examinations in coordination with health authorities. Vaccination has also been made available for both inmates and staff, along with the issuance of an organizational memo urging all prisons to raise their state of alert and adopt strict preventive measures upon detecting any new symptoms.
The delegation has called on inmates’ families to refrain from visiting them if they exhibit any symptoms of the disease, in order to ensure the safety of all inmates and prevent the spread of infection. These measures are part of the national plan by the Ministry of Health to combat measles, with the delegation reaffirming its commitment to cooperating with relevant authorities to ensure control over the situation and protect everyone involved.
These reported cases come at a time when Morocco is facing growing concerns about the spread of measles, a preventable disease through an effective and inexpensive vaccine. This situation highlights the urgent need to enhance health awareness and implement strict preventive measures within prison facilities to safeguard both inmates and staff alike.
