Morocco Accelerates Energy Transition with Strategic Measures

During a parliamentary session, Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, outlined key measures and strategic shifts shaping Morocco’s energy sector. The minister emphasized that since 2009, Morocco has implemented significant steps to secure its national energy supply and improve its competitiveness. This includes reducing energy dependency on imports and advancing renewable energy projects.

Benali highlighted the acceleration in the sector’s progress through administrative simplifications and streamlined licensing processes, which have encouraged investments in renewable energy.

The minister reported that the government has approved new investment projects totaling approximately 2000 megawatts, creating over 300 direct jobs and thousands of indirect opportunities. She also underlined the government’s efforts to enhance governance within the energy sector, including reforming the National Electricity Regulatory Authority and broadening its scope to cover all energy components.

Regarding infrastructure, the minister announced plans to invest MAD 30 billion between 2024 and 2030 to upgrade Morocco’s electrical grid. These investments will include improving the interconnection between the southern and central regions of the country. She also stressed the importance of leveraging natural gas to ensure energy supply stability, particularly given the inherent variability of renewable energy sources.

In her concluding remarks, Benali reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to a successful energy transition in alignment with the royal directives. This transition aims to enhance Morocco’s energy independence while reducing energy costs for citizens, marking a pivotal step toward a sustainable and competitive energy future.
