Minister of Health Explains Freezing and Cancellation of Government Health Contracts

During a recent session of oral questions in the House of Representatives, the issue of freezing and canceling government contracts in the health sector, especially those worth hundreds of millions of dirhams, was raised. One of the questions focused on the details of these decisions, particularly regarding a contract valued at 180 million dirhams related to the patient-sharing program. There was also mention of the potential amendment of the specifications to determine which companies would be awarded these contracts.

In his response, Minister of Health and Social Protection, Mr. Amine Tehrouawi, clarified that the decision to freeze these contracts was made after his appointment, emphasizing the need for a thorough review of the mechanisms for executing these projects before committing to any large financial decisions. He stated, “From my position of responsibility, I cannot sign off on contracts worth between 100 and 300 million dirhams within a week or two, without being absolutely certain about where this public money will go.”

The minister emphasized that his decision was driven by a commitment to the prudent management of public funds. He further explained that the goal is to carefully evaluate each contract to ensure full compliance with legal and contractual standards.
