The youth wing of the Justice and Development Party in Fes recently highlighted the deteriorating condition of the covered sports hall in Al-Owinaat Al-Hajjaj district, following a site visit in response to numerous complaints from local youth. The youth group stated that the hall has fallen into a state of disrepair, having suffered significant damage and lacking even the most basic maintenance and restoration. As a result, it is no longer suitable for sports activities and has turned into an abandoned space frequented by delinquents at night.
Once considered one of the most important sports facilities in the area, the hall underwent multiple maintenance and rehabilitation contracts. The local authorities also introduced tax regulations to organize its usage, ensuring that local youth and children benefited from the facility. However, neglect and the absence of regular maintenance have led to its current state, with the building now lacking basic features like doors and windows.
Despite prior efforts to rehabilitate the hall, the current situation raises concerns about the effectiveness of local management of such facilities. According to the complaints, the lack of security and maintenance has made the hall an unsafe space, threatening the well-being of residents and local youth while undermining its original purpose.
This issue comes at a time when large budgets are being allocated to upgrade sports stadiums in preparation for international events, highlighting a stark contradiction in priority distribution. Local residents and youth are calling for immediate intervention from relevant authorities to restore the covered sports hall and ensure its long-term maintenance, allowing it to return to its original role as a valuable sports facility for the community.
