During the public session of the House of Representatives on Monday, January 6, 2025, Minister of Health and Social Protection, Mr. Amin Al-Tahraoui, presented the key efforts undertaken by his ministry as part of the ongoing reform of Morocco’s national health system. He emphasized that the ministry has been actively engaged in the implementation of the health system reform to complement the nationwide social protection expansion, in line with the directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. The primary goal of these reforms is to enhance access to health services and social protection for all citizens while strengthening the healthcare system’s capacity.
The minister highlighted the issuance of the national health system framework law (No. 06-22) in 2022, which focuses on four main pillars, including the improvement of healthcare provision and the equitable distribution of health services across the country. He added that the ministry is working on constructing and equipping healthcare facilities, including the building of new hospitals and the expansion and modernization of existing ones. To date, 78 healthcare institutions have been built or renovated, with a total capacity exceeding 1,100 beds, at an estimated cost of 42 billion dirhams.
Minister Al-Tahraoui also noted that the ministry is continuing the construction of five university hospitals and 38 regional and provincial hospitals, as well as the establishment of 40 nearby hospitals, which will increase bed capacity by approximately 5,750 additional beds. Furthermore, he mentioned ongoing efforts to improve university healthcare centers, with significant projects in Agadir, Ain Sebaa, Guelmim, and Errachidia, costing an estimated 1.7 billion dirhams, set for completion in 2025.
Regarding the aftermath of the earthquake that struck the Al-Haouz region, the minister indicated that 195 healthcare facilities have been included in an urgent repair and renovation program, with a budget of 818 million dirhams. Additionally, other major projects in the affected areas are valued at 17 billion dirhams.
The minister also addressed the collaboration with local authorities and international organizations such as the European Investment Bank and the Islamic Development Bank, which have mobilized significant financial investments amounting to 6 billion dirhams to enhance health infrastructure and medical equipment. He assured that the ministry continues its efforts to improve working conditions for healthcare professionals, providing an environment that fosters performance and meets their professional and material needs.
In conclusion, Minister Al-Tahraoui reiterated that the ongoing reforms aim to achieve spatial equity in the distribution of health services across the country and ensure that all citizens benefit from quality and effective healthcare.
