Family Code: Government Requests Postponement of Examination by Justice Commission

The Justice, Legislation, Human Rights, and Freedoms Commission in the House of Representatives has announced the postponement of its meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday, January 7, which was set to discuss the outlines of the revision of the Family Code. The commission’s president, Saïd Baaziz, informed members in a correspondence that the meeting has been postponed to a later date at the government’s request.

Several deputies, including Driss Sentissi, president of the Popular Movement parliamentary group, have sought clarifications regarding recent developments concerning the Family Code revision. These deputies emphasized the importance of transparent communication surrounding this issue.

During a parliamentary intervention, Sentissi recalled that “His Majesty the King, during the working session related to the Family Code, presented proposals for revision and referred religious text proposals to the Higher Council of Ulema, while charging the Head of Government and ministers with communicating with the public.”

He also called for the establishment of a joint parliamentary commission to combat rumors and misinformation regarding the Moudawana. “Many questions are taken out of context. We demand a joint commission to clarify public opinion and put an end to rumors.”

Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi provided a brief presentation of the proposed revisions to the Family Code during the last government council meeting, in accordance with His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s directives. These directives follow a working session chaired by the King on December 23, 2024, at the royal palace in Casablanca.

In a statement to the press, Mustapha Baitas, government spokesperson, indicated that the executive is working on implementing provisions of the Family Code based on clear orientations rooted in four fundamental principles: justice, equality, solidarity, and harmony. He specified that the legislative initiative being prepared aligns with this direction while ensuring reasonable timelines and precise drafting of texts.
