Benkirane Highlights Growing Social Inequalities and Calls for Corporate Responsibility

Abdelilah Benkirane, former Moroccan Prime Minister, recently discussed the issue of widening social inequalities caused by the practices of certain large retail chains. He criticized these businesses for concentrating their activities in major cities and catering to a specific demographic car owners while neglecting the needs of more vulnerable groups who find it challenging to access such services.

Benkirane emphasized that true responsibility lies not merely in financial capability but in a genuine desire to serve citizens and achieve social justice. He clarified that the aim is not superficial equality but real justice that considers social disparities and ensures basic needs are met for the poor and underprivileged. He called on major corporations to contribute positively to the country’s economic and social fabric rather than exploiting the purchasing power of citizens for profit.

Reflecting on his time in office, Benkirane admitted there were areas that may not have been adequately addressed, despite the government taking various measures to support citizens. He expressed his willingness to apologize if mistakes were made, but he emphasized the importance of prioritizing efforts to improve the well-being of citizens under all circumstances.

Benkirane also addressed harmful commercial practices, such as altering the quality of products like milk and dairy derivatives. He stressed the need for stricter oversight and enforcement of laws to curb such violations. He called for a corrective approach that guides companies toward ethical practices while avoiding excessive punitive measures.
