Continued Israeli Airstrikes on Gaza Amid Ceasefire Negotiations

Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip continue, resulting in at least 23 deaths, according to local emergency services. These attacks come as indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas are taking place in Qatar, aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement and securing the release of hostages held in Gaza.

The violence in the besieged enclave, which has suffered from nearly 15 months of war, has intensified. Civil defense sources in Gaza reported that one airstrike resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals, including women and children, when a house was targeted in northern Gaza. Rescue teams are still searching for five missing persons under the rubble, facing a lack of necessary equipment for rescue operations.

Reports indicate that additional Israeli strikes across various parts of Gaza have led to 12 more fatalities. The spokesperson for civil defense, Mahmoud Bassal, accused the Israeli occupation of using the pretext of the presence of fighters to carry out violent airstrikes on homes housing displaced individuals.

In response, Israeli forces announced that they had targeted over 100 “terrorist targets” within two days, claiming to have eliminated several Hamas members. They also asserted that they had killed a commander of the Islamic Jihad movement who participated in the October 7 attack that triggered the war.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened to escalate military pressure on Gaza if Hamas continued its rocket attacks on Israel. In another context, he accused Hezbollah of not adhering to the terms of a ceasefire agreement that came into effect on November 27.

In Doha, little information has leaked regarding ongoing discussions about Gaza, as no ceasefire agreement has been reached since late November. The French Foreign Minister expressed “slim hopes” for an agreement between Israel and Hamas, noting that this matter does not solely depend on French efforts.

The main sticking points preventing an agreement include the nature of the ceasefire and whether it will be permanent or not, as well as governance in Gaza after the war. This new round of talks comes less than three weeks before the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Since the beginning of the conflict, attacks have resulted in over 1,208 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, while casualties from the Israeli military campaign in Gaza have exceeded 45,805 people, according to the latest statistics from Hamas’s health ministry.
