Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Saturday the resumption of indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Qatar, aimed at obtaining information about the hostages held since the attack launched by the Palestinian movement on October 7, 2023. This step comes after Hamas released a video showing Israeli hostage Liri Albag, 19 years old, prompting increasing calls from her family for the Israeli government to take action for her release.
The discussions are focused not only on the release of hostages but also on the possibility of reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Hamas confirmed that the negotiations would include a “complete cessation of hostilities” and the need for Israeli troops to withdraw from Gaza, which has been suffering from the consequences of ongoing conflict for over 15 months. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reassured Albag’s family that efforts are ongoing to bring all hostages home.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, no ceasefire has been reached since the one that took place at the end of November 2023, which resulted in the release of several hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Previous negotiations in Doha failed, with Hamas and Israel exchanging accusations of obstructing the process. Protests continue in Israel demanding the swift release of hostages, while Israeli airstrikes on Gaza persist.
