In a new escalation of events, rescue services in Gaza reported that at least 26 people were killed due to Israeli airstrikes, just one day after Hamas announced the resumption of negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement. This escalation comes after nearly 15 months of ongoing conflict.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz had threatened on Wednesday to intensify military pressure on Gaza if Hamas continued to launch rockets. Since then, the area has witnessed near-daily rocket fire, while Israel continues its air raids. The Hamas health ministry reported 136 deaths over the past 48 hours, a figure deemed reliable by the United Nations.
Among the deadliest strikes was one targeting the home of the al-Ghoul family in Gaza City, which resulted in 11 fatalities, including seven children and a woman. Witnesses described the moment of the explosion as horrifying, as it completely destroyed the house and left victims trapped under the rubble. Rescue teams also reported that five security personnel escorting humanitarian convoys in Khan Younis were killed in an Israeli airstrike.
Amid these tense conditions, indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel resumed in Doha. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu allowed negotiators to continue discussions in Qatar regarding the release of hostages held in Gaza since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Hamas announced that this new round of negotiations would address a “complete cessation of hostilities” and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. Despite intense diplomatic efforts led by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, no ceasefire agreement has been reached since a temporary truce at the end of November 2023.
It is noteworthy that the current war erupted following an unprecedented attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,208 people in Israel, most of whom were civilians. In response, reports indicate that the Israeli military campaign in Gaza has led to at least 45,717 deaths, primarily among civilians. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening amid ongoing military pressures and a lack of access to essential aid for the civilian population.
