Biden Administration Announces $8 Billion Arms Sale to Israel Amid Rising Tensions

The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Saturday an arms sale to Israel valued at $8 billion, just ahead of Donald Trump’s return to the White House. The deal, which still requires approval from Congress, includes defensive components such as anti-aircraft munitions.

This move comes at a time when Biden is facing increasing pressure from certain human rights organizations and Democratic lawmakers who oppose such sales to Israel. A source close to the administration stated that “the president has made it clear that Israel has the right to defend its citizens in accordance with international law and international humanitarian law, and to deter any aggression from Iran and its affiliated organizations.”

In a related context, Senator Bernie Sanders had called in a speech before Congress in November for an end to these arms sales, stating that “the United States is complicit in all these atrocities,” and emphasized the need to stop funding these violations.

On the other hand, President-elect Donald Trump has pledged unwavering support for Israel and has never committed to supporting an independent Palestinian state. However, Trump has also expressed a desire to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

Despite intense diplomatic efforts led by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, no truce has been reached since the week-long ceasefire at the end of November 2023. The war in Gaza was triggered by an unprecedented attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,208 people, mostly civilians, according to reports from AFP based on official Israeli figures.

Meanwhile, the Hamas Health Ministry reported that the Israeli military campaign in Gaza has resulted in at least 45,717 deaths, primarily among civilians.
