The General Secretariat of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) held an extraordinary meeting on Sunday, December 29. During the meeting, Abdelilah Benkirane, the party’s Secretary-General, addressed the controversial statements made by some ministers regarding Morocco’s Family Code, which have sparked unprecedented social reactions.
In his remarks, Benkirane emphasized that the discussed positions regarding the Family Code have not yet reached the level of legal texts or formal proposals. Instead, they remain within the scope of royal directives. He commended the wisdom of King Mohammed VI, who entrusted religious matters to the Supreme Council of Ulema, underscoring Morocco’s respect for its religious particularities.
Benkirane highlighted that debates surrounding contentious issues, such as inheritance laws, lineage, and inheritance between Muslims and non-Muslims, have been resolved by fatwas from the Supreme Council of Ulema and are widely accepted by Moroccan society. However, he acknowledged that unresolved matters remain open for public discussion, urging all parties to approach these topics with freedom and responsibility.
The Secretary-General stressed that the PJD firmly opposes any attempts to compromise Morocco’s religious or social constants. At the same time, the party welcomes constructive dialogue aimed at serving the public good within an Islamic framework. He also emphasized Morocco’s unique cultural and social identity, cautioning against external pressures seeking to impose agendas misaligned with the nation’s identity.
Benkirane concluded by affirming the party’s commitment to offering constructive guidance and positive contributions to societal discussions, ensuring a balance between reform and respect for national values and principles.
