Mauritanian media reports suggest that King Mohammed VI is likely to make an official visit to Mauritania in March 2025, coinciding with the meeting of the High Joint Commission between the two countries. This news comes amid a notable improvement in Moroccan-Mauritanian relations, especially following the recent meeting between the Moroccan monarch and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani at the Royal Palace in Casablanca on December 20th.
Both sides praised the positive development of the partnership between the two countries in various fields, affirming their determination to develop strategic projects to connect them, and to coordinate their contributions within the framework of Royal initiatives in Africa, particularly the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline and the initiative to facilitate Sahel countries’ access to the Atlantic Ocean.
Mauritanian researcher Sid Ahmed Ould Bah views the relations between the two countries as strategic and very special, noting that “cooperation relations between the governments of the two countries have witnessed significant expansion in recent years.” Morocco has become the largest African investor in Mauritania, with its banking, industrial, and telecommunications institutions playing a key role in stimulating the Mauritanian economic sector.
In a related context, the foreign ministers of both countries, Nasser Bourita and Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, confirmed during a joint press conference in Rabat that bilateral relations promise promising prospects. They indicated that these relations, built on shared history, aim to become a model for fruitful cooperation in Africa, through enhancing trade exchange and Moroccan assistance in education and infrastructure for the benefit of the Mauritanian people.
It is worth noting that King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani had previously affirmed, during a phone call, the special and distinguished nature of relations between Morocco and Mauritania. The Moroccan monarch expressed his appreciation for the crucial role played by the Mauritanian President in the stability and development of his country, as well as in the Sahel region and West Africa.
