Moroccan Cannabis Industry Achieves 4,082 Tons in 2024: A Step Toward Sustainable Development

The Moroccan Cannabis Industry Association announced an impressive production total of 4,082 tons for the current year, attributing this achievement to the ongoing efforts of the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis Activities (ANRAC). The agency’s collaboration with farmers, cooperatives, and specialized companies in processing, marketing, exporting, and importing has been a driving force behind these results.

The association highlighted the regulatory measures enabling the use of the local cannabis strain known as “Beldia”. Renowned for its medicinal and pharmaceutical properties, this Moroccan strain is seen as a cornerstone for the sector’s development strategies. The association emphasized the need to promote its medical and industrial applications, considering it a valuable agricultural heritage that requires sustainable support to ensure its preservation.

In addition, the association called for transitioning illegal cannabis cultivation toward sustainable and legal activities that generate new job opportunities. It proposed that 2025 be a turning point for the sector, focusing on advancing scientific research, organizing conferences, and offering training sessions to explore the diverse applications of cannabis.

Among its recommendations, the association advocated for the establishment of a national laboratory dedicated to cannabis research, enhancing agricultural vocational training in cultivation areas, and providing specialized technical training for farmers. It also stressed the importance of supporting the local “Beldia” strain, whose cultivation area has been shrinking, and encouraged the creation of new processing industries to add value to cannabis rather than exporting it as raw material. Furthermore, it called for fostering investments in the sector and supporting projects that generate significant added value.

In its closing statement, the association asserted that cannabis could play a vital role in achieving sustainable economic development in Morocco if its potential is harnessed through scientific and well-organized approaches. It emphasized the importance of balancing national economic interests with environmental protection to ensure the sector’s long-term viability.
