On December 24, Moroccan Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi unveiled key proposals to amend the nation’s Family Law, emphasizing that this initiative aligns with the royal directives aimed at achieving social justice and strengthening family stability. The minister highlighted that the proposed changes represent a comprehensive vision designed to safeguard individual rights, particularly those of women and children, while respecting Morocco’s societal and cultural values.
Ouahbi noted that the Ministry of Justice is addressing several legal challenges identified through the practical application of the current Family Law. These include promoting gender equality, simplifying legal procedures, and expediting the resolution of family disputes. He further revealed that the amendments aim to improve regulations related to custody and alimony, with a strong focus on protecting children’s rights and ensuring their best interests in all situations.
The minister stressed that the proposed reforms are being developed in collaboration with various stakeholders, including legal experts and representatives from civil society, to achieve a balanced approach that accommodates diverse perspectives. Additionally, the proposed amendments will be subject to public debate, fostering dialogue and involving different social groups in crafting legislation that reflects the aspirations of Moroccans and addresses contemporary challenges.
Minister Ouahbi concluded by underscoring that the reform of the Family Law is a pivotal step in Morocco’s broader legal reforms, which aim to reinforce the rule of law, promote sustainable development, and enhance social stability.
