In a notable political move, the Moroccan Popular Movement party announced the integration of the Moroccan Democratic Bloc into its ranks during the fourth session of the party’s National Council held in Ifrane on Saturday, December 21, 2024. This decision came at the request of the bloc itself.
In his statements, Mohamed Ouzzine, the Secretary-General of the Popular Movement, clarified that this step is not a political merger in the strict sense of the word, but rather a process of integration, pointing out that the Moroccan Democratic Bloc is not a political party in the first place. Ouzzine also revealed that the party is prepared to welcome more integration processes in the near future, without disclosing additional details in this regard.
In a related context, the leadership of the Popular Movement categorically denied any connection of Hamid Chabat, the former Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party, to this process, despite him being the founder of the Moroccan Democratic Bloc in 2022. This denial comes amid speculation about Chabat’s political future after leaving the Istiqlal Party.
On the other hand, the party leadership confirmed that it had not conducted any negotiations with Salaheddine Abou El Ghali, the former member of the Authenticity and Modernity Party whose membership was recently suspended. With this denial, the Popular Movement puts an end to rumors that circulated about the possibility of Abou El Ghali joining its ranks.
These developments come within the framework of the changing Moroccan political landscape, where parties seek to strengthen their positions and expand their popular bases. It appears that the Popular Movement is taking strategic steps to strengthen its position in the political arena by attracting new political blocs and figures. The coming days are expected to witness more political movements and alliances in the Kingdom of Morocco.
