During a session of the House of Advisors on December 17, 2024, the Minister in charge of industrial development and mining projects addressed a question from a member of the Moroccan Labor Union regarding improving working conditions in the mining sector and ensuring the safety of workers.
In her response, the minister provided a clear vision of the measures being taken by the ministry to improve the working environment in this vital sector and reaffirmed the government’s full commitment to enhancing occupational safety for mine workers.
The minister emphasized that this issue is a top priority on her ministry’s agenda. The ministry closely monitors the operations of mining companies and ensures the implementation of preventive and safety measures through specialized teams. She explained that the ministry oversees the inspection of facilities and enforces environmental and health conditions at work sites through its external departments. These measures are essential to ensuring a safe and healthy working environment.
The minister also discussed the importance of the amendment to Mining Law No. 33.13, which aims to strengthen the monitoring role, particularly concerning inspectors and intensifying their efforts to enforce labor regulations in mines. She mentioned that once approved, the new law would improve oversight mechanisms, including enhancing safety at mining facilities and reducing workplace accidents.
Additionally, the minister highlighted the ministry’s commitment to responding to any workplace accidents that occur in the mining sector. She assured that the ministry takes immediate action to investigate incidents and prepare comprehensive field reports. As an example of the ministry’s swift response, she cited an investigation into the death of a worker in a mine the previous week, which was completed in less than 48 hours in coordination with local authorities and the relevant companies to ensure appropriate actions were taken.
The minister also confirmed that the ministry enforces strict measures to ensure the health and safety of mine workers, including the monitoring of the use of explosives and other mining materials that could pose a risk to workers’ safety. She noted the ministry’s ongoing cooperation with all stakeholders, including unions, to improve working conditions in the sector and provide a safe environment for workers.
In conclusion, the minister reaffirmed that the ministry would continue to improve inspector performance and expand their duties to ensure compliance with labor laws in the mining sector. She announced the ministry’s readiness to continue working with all relevant partners to ensure a safe and healthy working environment at all mining sites across Morocco.
This statement comes at a critical time as the mining sector faces various challenges, but with the government’s commitment to enforcing regulations and improving oversight, this approach is expected to contribute to better working conditions and the protection of workers’ rights in the future.
