In a session held on December 17, 2024, the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, provided an overview of Morocco’s progress in the energy sector, despite the challenges posed by the global energy landscape. The minister emphasized that the government absorbed the increased costs of electricity production in 2022 and 2023 to prevent these rises from affecting citizens’ bills, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting purchasing power while striving for a transformative shift in the sector.
Minister Benali highlighted that competitive investments in renewable energy had enabled Morocco to significantly reduce electricity production costs. The cost of production has now fallen below 40 cents per kWh, and in some cases, it has reached approximately 30 cents. This development positions Morocco as a leader in clean and cost-effective energy production, enhancing its competitiveness in the field.
The minister also pointed out that the ministry had launched a series of legal reforms in 2022 and 2023, most notably the Energy Efficiency Law No. 47, which is a key part of the national strategy to enhance energy efficiency. Additionally, an innovative program was introduced to reward consumers directly for reducing energy consumption, resulting in a saving of 800 gigawatt-hours, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of the city of Meknes.
Benali further emphasized that these efforts are part of a strategic vision aimed at achieving energy independence through the use of clean sources such as solar and wind energy. She noted that these achievements mark a historical turning point in Morocco’s energy journey, as the country has transitioned from relying on coal and oil to producing energy from renewable and sustainable sources.
In closing, the minister affirmed that Morocco continues its efforts to develop an energy sector that aligns with global developments, reinforcing its position as a leading nation in energy transition and sustainable development.
