Morocco’s Unemployment Rate Rises to 21%, Census Highlights Regional and Gender Disparities

During the press conference presenting the complete results of the 2024 General Census of Population and Housing, Morocco’s High Commissioner for Planning, Chakib Benmoussa, revealed that the national unemployment rate has risen to 21%, with significant regional disparities. He highlighted that some regions report unemployment rates higher than the national average, reflecting persistent challenges in the labor market.

Benmoussa emphasized that women remain the most affected by these challenges, with the census results showing a decline in their economic participation compared to previous periods. He pointed to structural barriers that demand more comprehensive interventions to enhance women’s role in the national economy.

The census findings, based on extensive surveys conducted over a long period, offer greater accuracy and reliability compared to periodic quarterly statistics. Benmoussa noted that these methodological differences explain the variance between the unemployment rates recorded in the general census and those reported in regular studies.

In conclusion, he stated that the census results serve as a vital tool for shaping public policies aimed at achieving sustainable development, particularly in addressing regional inequalities and advancing gender equality.
