Shkib Benmoussa Presents 2024 General Population and Housing Census Results

In a press conference held on December 17, 2024, the High Commissioner for Planning, Shkib Benmoussa, presented the full results of the 2024 General Population and Housing Census. Benmoussa highlighted the significant progress in various demographic and infrastructure sectors in Morocco.

He noted that the percentage of households owning their homes had increased to approximately 70%, reflecting the stability of housing for Moroccans. Additionally, he pointed out a rise in the number of households owning modern homes, with data showing that 22% of residences were less than 10 years old, compared to 20% in 2014.

Benmoussa also discussed changes in household sizes, indicating that the percentage of households living in homes with one or two rooms had increased to 43%, compared to 36% in previous years. This suggests a rise in smaller households.

Regarding basic services, Benmoussa confirmed that electricity coverage had reached 97% of Moroccan households, while 83% were connected to the water network. However, he acknowledged that challenges remain, particularly in rural areas, where sanitation coverage is still at 65%.

Benmoussa also addressed demographic shifts, noting that households have become smaller, reflecting changes in the population structure due to lower fertility rates and higher life expectancy. He pointed out that access to basic services remains significantly different between urban and rural areas, with rural regions still requiring more effort to improve service levels.

In conclusion, Benmoussa emphasized that the census results highlight Morocco’s progress in several areas, but also reveal ongoing challenges in providing basic services and improving housing conditions in rural areas.
