Morocco has achieved a new sporting success in Muay Thai, as Yassine Mahsoun and Hamza Rachid were crowned champions at the World Muaythai Council (WMC) African Championship held on Saturday in Casablanca.
Yassine Mahsoun clinched the continental title in the 67 kg weight category after defeating Senegalese Madou Ba by knockout in the second round of the bout. In the 69.5 kg category, Hamza Rachid secured the title following his victory on points against Congolese Alik Kanafi in a match that lasted five rounds.
A statement issued by the Royal Moroccan Federation of Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Savate, and Associated Sports explained that this continental championship was organized by the Casablanca-Settat Regional League and “Boxing Event” under the federation’s supervision. The competition took place as part of a sporting event that featured 12 other fights involving champions from Morocco, France, and Belgium.
This achievement continues the string of successes Morocco has been realizing in Muay Thai at the African level. The Moroccan national team had previously won the African Championship title in its third edition held in Cairo in 2024, securing 15 medals, including 9 golds.
The victories of Mahsoun and Rachid affirm Morocco’s prominent position in Muay Thai and reinforce its reputation as a rising sporting power in this field at the continental level. This accomplishment also opens new horizons for Moroccan athletes to compete for world titles in the near future.
