The Rabat Security Prefecture has issued a clarifying statement regarding an incident circulated on social media, showing a police intervention involving a motorcycle officer and a road user. The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 10th, and is currently the subject of a judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office.
According to the statement, the suspected driver has been placed under police custody for allegedly assaulting a police officer during the performance of his duties, resulting in the breaking of the officer’s front teeth. A second person was also presented in a state of release on suspicion of complicity and altering the technical characteristics of a vehicle.
Preliminary information indicates that the suspect refused to comply with traffic control procedures after being suspected of modifying his motorcycle’s technical characteristics. He also attempted to prevent the officer from inspecting a similar violation by another driver, claiming he was a work colleague, before physically and verbally assaulting the police officer.
The Wilaya Judicial Police Service in Rabat has been tasked with conducting the necessary investigations to uncover all the circumstances of the case. The investigations also included determining the reasons for the officer’s display of his service weapon, which available information so far indicates was accidental due to the weapon falling to the ground after the officer was subjected to violence and resistance.
This incident comes in the context of ongoing efforts by security forces in Rabat to combat dangerous behavior on the roads. Earlier this week, 16 people were arrested in Rabat on charges of dangerous and reckless driving, indicating a tightening of security measures to curb these phenomena.
The Rabat Security Prefecture emphasized that it is committed to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, ensuring that all aspects are examined carefully. The authorities also urged the public to await the official results of the investigation and to refrain from spreading unverified information that could hinder the ongoing judicial process.
