The Ministry of Education in Tunisia has issued a decision banning the possession and use of smartphones within schools and institutes. This decision comes as part of efforts to improve discipline within educational institutions and address the increasing phenomenon of digital violence.
The decision was made following a tragic incident where a teacher committed suicide by self-immolation after being subjected to an online bullying campaign by his students. The students had filmed a video of the teacher and shared it on social media, leading to severe psychological consequences.
The Ministry of Education sent a memorandum to its regional delegations, instructing school and institute directors to:
- Inform students that bringing smartphones to educational institutions is prohibited for any reason.
- Notify parents of this decision.
- Strictly forbid filming within school premises, except with prior permission from the school principal.
Recently, warnings have increased in Tunisia about the excessive use of mobile phones and social media within educational institutions. These devices have turned into tools for bullying and virtual violence, and the phenomenon of filming during classes and defaming teachers has increased.
Experts consider this decision an important step towards improving the educational environment and protecting both students and teachers. Psychologist Marwan Riahi emphasizes the importance of this decision, noting that “smartphones have become a psychological and behavioral addiction with implications similar to addiction to prohibited substances.”
The implementation of this decision is expected to face some challenges. Therefore, specialists call for the need to establish a clear legal and procedural framework to ensure its successful implementation. They also stress the importance of the role of psychologists and social workers in schools to monitor cases affected by this phenomenon and develop educational intervention programs.
Ultimately, the success of this decision depends on the cooperation of all concerned parties, including school administrations, teachers, parents, and students, to achieve a safe and effective educational environment that focuses on academic achievement and personal development of students.
