In a public session at the House of Representatives on Monday, December 9, 2024, Minister of Culture, Youth, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, addressed the significant challenges facing press institutions in Morocco. He explained that the crises affecting the journalistic sector are the result of previous government policies that failed to account for the rapid transformations in the media world, particularly with the shift to the digital and economic spheres. The minister noted that these policies had a negative impact on press institutions, which were not sufficiently supported to cope with financial and administrative crises.
Bensaid emphasized that the previous government had provided direct support to journalists during the COVID-19 pandemic, calling this initiative a positive step to help journalists overcome the crisis. However, he pointed out that the current government recognizes that the situation has changed, and it is now necessary to reconsider the public support mechanisms for press institutions in a way that aligns with modern challenges. He stressed that this support must be tailored to meet the needs of press institutions to ensure their financial and economic sustainability.
The minister stressed that public support must be transparent and fair, adding that the government will work to ensure that support is directed to media institutions that adhere to specific criteria, including providing employment opportunities for journalists and maintaining editorial independence. He also highlighted that the issue of competitiveness in the advertising sector is one of the biggest challenges facing small and medium-sized press institutions, which struggle with the dominance of large companies in the advertising market.
Bensaid pointed out that the government is seeking sustainable solutions to support press institutions, which will not be limited to financial assistance but will also include strengthening journalistic training and developing new skills to keep pace with digital transformations. He explained that there is a need for a comprehensive strategy aimed at strengthening press institutions and enabling them to adapt to the requirements of the digital age, through improving journalistic performance and increasing the diversity of financial sources.
In conclusion, Bensaid affirmed that the government will continue to support the media sector, but it will ensure that this support is conditional on meeting certain criteria that guarantee sustainability and effectiveness. He added that the government fully understands the importance of the media in democratic and societal life and will strive to develop this sector and enhance its role in providing accurate and objective news and information.
