In a powerful speech delivered during the Justice and Development Party’s (PJD) elected officials’ conference on December 9, 2024, Abdelilah Benkirane, the Secretary-General of PJD, emphasized the party’s steadfast positions on various Arab and regional issues, particularly its stance on the Syrian crisis.
Benkirane noted that despite the challenges and hardships faced by the Syrian people, Morocco, and through it, PJD, remains steadfast in supporting the Syrian people in their struggle against the dictatorial regime that has ravaged the country, causing widespread suffering. He confirmed that under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has always been committed to maintaining its stability at a time when some Arab countries were heading toward uncertainty. Benkirane highlighted Morocco’s vital role in its regional environment, pointing out that the country’s stability was not easily achieved, but it was a strategic choice to safeguard the interests of the Moroccan people.
The PJD leader expanded on the Syrian crisis, referring to the “tyranny” imposed by the Syrian regime on its people, stressing that Morocco cannot but stand with the Syrian people in light of the oppression they face. He discussed Morocco’s political stance, including its rejection of justifying the events in Syria and its condemnation of the brutal repression against Syrian civilians, reiterating that Morocco has always sided with justice and the people.
Benkirane also reflected on the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, asserting that this despotic regime failed to preserve the unity of Syria and instead led the country to fragmentation and destruction. He added that despite the tragedy, the Syrian people were ultimately able to overthrow the regime.
Turning to domestic politics, Benkirane addressed the challenges currently faced by the PJD. He noted that the changes in Morocco following the February 20, 2011 protests marked a turning point in the political landscape. He emphasized that the Justice and Development Party played a key role in the transitional phase and continues to work toward fulfilling the Moroccan people’s aspirations for justice, freedom, and development.
Benkirane highlighted the importance of maintaining internal stability in Morocco, stressing that the government at the time took significant steps, including constitutional reforms and early elections in 2011, which were postponed until 2012, sparking varied reactions. He noted that PJD won those elections and played a leading role in the government, demonstrating its ability to shoulder responsibility amidst complex political circumstances.
In conclusion, Benkirane called for unity and solidarity among all segments of Moroccan society in facing the country’s economic and social challenges, emphasizing that Morocco is capable of maintaining its stability and progressing toward a brighter future if everyone’s efforts are united.
