Minister of Agriculture Highlights Achievements and Future Plans in Agricultural Development

During a session at the House of Councillors, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water, and Forests, Ahmed Bouari, presented the achievements of the agricultural sector and outlined future plans to enhance agricultural development and address water resource challenges.

The minister reported that sales of certified seeds for autumn cereals reached 550,000 quintals, marking a 12% increase compared to last season and accounting for approximately 50% of planned targets. Additionally, 21,000 tons of nitrogen fertilizers were distributed, benefiting 12,000 farmers, representing 10% of the targeted program.

Regarding annual crops, the minister noted that 1.57 million hectares have been plowed, with 95% using mechanical methods. Of this, 1.46 million hectares have been planted, including 1.16 million hectares of essential autumn cereals, divided into soft wheat (43%), barley (36%), and durum wheat (21%).

For sugar crops, 31,000 hectares were planted, representing 69% of the targeted program, along with the cultivation of 1,170 hectares of sugarcane. As for autumn vegetables, 8,550 hectares were planted, covering 80% of the program.

On the export front, the minister highlighted significant growth, with citrus exports reaching 120,000 tons as of November 24, 2024, a 91% increase compared to the same period last year. Fresh vegetable exports totaled 420,000 tons, reflecting a 55% rise.

Addressing water resources, Bouari emphasized the strategic importance of the seawater desalination project in the Souss region, which aims to produce 350 million cubic meters of water, including 250 million cubic meters dedicated to agricultural irrigation. This project is expected to meet the region’s water demands effectively.

The minister concluded by emphasizing that these measures are designed to strengthen the resilience and productivity of the agricultural sector, focusing on sustainability, pastoral and livestock system restructuring, and improved water resource management.
