Moroccan Ministry of Justice Launches Digital Platform for Alternative Sentencing

Moroccan Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Wehbe, has unveiled a new initiative to develop the criminal justice system in the Kingdom. During his appearance on the program “Nuqta ila Satr” on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, the Minister announced the launch of a digital platform dedicated to implementing alternative sentences.

Wehbe explained that this platform will provide judges with the ability to identify the nearest locations for carrying out social penalties, taking into account their proximity to the residences of convicts’ families. It will also allow lawyers to review available options before submitting requests for release or community service.

Regarding the costs of implementing these sentences, the Minister confirmed that the state will support low-income individuals, while those who are financially capable will bear the implementation costs themselves.

In a related context, Wehbe pointed out the substantial amendments made to the Criminal Procedure Code, which included revising 1,200 articles, of which 400 underwent significant modifications. He added that these amendments came after a national debate that lasted for three years, confirming that the law is currently in the consultation phase with lawyers in preparation for its presentation to parliament.

These initiatives aim to modernize the criminal justice system in Morocco and develop alternative punitive measures that consider social and humanitarian dimensions, reflecting the Ministry’s commitment to improving the justice system and enhancing citizens’ rights.
