During a session at the House of Councillors on December 3, 2024, Minister of Islamic Affairs Ahmed Toufiq outlined the ministry’s ongoing efforts to enhance and develop mosque infrastructure across the Kingdom. The minister revealed that, according to 2023 statistics, Morocco is home to 5,143 mosques, 72% of which are located in rural areas. He emphasized the ministry’s commitment to improving and equipping these mosques through new constructions, renovations, and the provision of essential furnishings and equipment.
The minister noted that a substantial annual budget is allocated for these initiatives, with 84.843 million dirhams earmarked in the 2024 fiscal year. This accounts for 17% of the ministry’s total budget and 70% of its investment budget. The ministry’s programs include building, renovating, and equipping mosques.
In terms of progress, the ministry completed the construction of 15 new mosques in 2024, with a total cost of 156 million dirhams. Additionally, 10 more mosques are currently under construction at an estimated cost of 133 million dirhams. The minister highlighted the role of philanthropists in funding the construction of smaller mosques, while the ministry focuses on larger projects.
The ministry is also addressing the issue of closed mosques, having renovated 70 such mosques at a cost of 273 million dirhams. Currently, 32 mosques are undergoing reconstruction or repairs, with a budget of 172 million dirhams, alongside 18 million dirhams allocated for maintaining 72 mosques.
Regarding damage caused by the recent earthquake, the minister reported that 2,516 religious structures, including 2,217 mosques and 299 zawiyas, were affected. The ministry has launched a special rehabilitation program, completing 244 assessments of the damages and scheduling 1,182 repair and restoration projects.
Minister Toufiq reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to enhancing the role of mosques in society, emphasizing its adherence to regulations and its efforts to facilitate the construction and maintenance processes. These initiatives reflect the state’s commitment to providing a comfortable and spiritually enriching environment for citizens across Morocco.
