During the plenary session of the House of Representatives on December 2, 2024, the Minister of Tourism emphasized that domestic tourism has become a key element in achieving economic, social, and regional development. She explained that the sector plays a significant role in job creation and boosting related industries, noting that domestic tourism has contributed to approximately 30 million overnight stays, including both classified and non-classified accommodations.
The Minister highlighted that Moroccan tourists are the primary customers for national tourist destinations, reflecting the importance of this sector in supporting the national economy. However, she stressed that domestic tourism faces the challenge of seasonality, with demand surging during summer holidays, which places pressure on the available tourism supply.
She also mentioned that the Ministry has developed a new roadmap aimed at diversifying tourism products to meet the needs of Moroccan tourists year-round, rather than just during summer vacations. This roadmap focuses on five main areas: enhancing accommodation through encouraging investment in sought-after tourism products, organizing local accommodation services to reduce costs, and accelerating the implementation of the legal framework for integrating new forms of accommodation through the application of Law No. 80.14.
The Minister further explained that improving the attractiveness of tourist products is a priority for the Ministry, with efforts focused on enhancing old cities, creating new tourist routes, and promoting cultural and natural spaces. Additionally, domestic air connectivity has been improved with the launch of new flight routes to connect different regions and reduce isolation in remote areas.
She emphasized the importance of leveraging pioneering projects to support domestic tourism, such as the “DinoPark” project in Azilal, the development of natural parks in Ifrane, Toubkal, and Souss-Massa, the creation of green stations in Khénifra and Loukidane, as well as entertainment projects in Casablanca and Marrakech.
In terms of promotion, the Ministry, in collaboration with the Moroccan National Tourism Office, launched a national campaign under the slogan “Let’s Meet in Our Country,” which focuses on enhancing internal transportation and promoting local destinations. The Minister also highlighted the importance of training human resources, noting the integration of 1,299 new tour guides into the structured sector in 2023.
The Minister concluded by emphasizing that these efforts are part of a comprehensive vision to strengthen domestic tourism as a key pillar of sustainable development, contributing to making Morocco a comprehensive and diverse tourist destination.
