The center of Casablanca was shaken yesterday Sunday by an unprecedented attack targeting a Russian diplomat and his wife, an incident described by witnesses as “horrifying” and sparking a major security alert.
The details unfolded when the Russian diplomat, who recently signed an agreement with the Moroccan Minister of Agriculture, was traveling in a smart transportation vehicle with his wife and driver, falling victim to a carefully planned ambush by a group of small taxi drivers.
The incident took a dramatic turn, with a taxi intercepting their path and quickly being joined by other drivers who surrounded the vehicle unexpectedly. The interception quickly escalated into a violent physical assault that first targeted the driver, then extended to the diplomat and his wife when they attempted to intervene.
The victims were taken to a private clinic for treatment, visibly showing signs of shock and exhaustion. Security authorities immediately launched an urgent investigation to identify the attackers who fled the scene.
The Attorney General at the Casablanca Court of Appeal personally intervened to follow the investigation, reflecting the gravity of the incident that was on the verge of causing a diplomatic crisis between Morocco and Russia.
