Damascus – The Syrian scene was rocked in recent hours by successive and conflicting developments, amid reports of a potential military coup and suspicious movements within the Syrian military establishment.
Media sources and analysts revealed alarming information, with security researcher Raslan Tarad pointing to possible battles between the Fourth Division led by Maher al-Assad and the Republican Guard in the capital Damascus. Tarad predicted the possibility of Maher al-Assad launching a military operation to regain control of lost territories in the north and center.
In a notable development, Turkish journalist Rajab Soylu quoted a high-ranking military source suggesting that some Syrian officers might be planning a coup to halt the rapid advance of armed opposition forces.
Information about President Bashar al-Assad’s location was contradictory, with Middle East Institute Director Charles Lister indicating his presence in Moscow with family members, while other reports confirmed his return to Damascus on a Russian plane.
Damascus, specifically the Kafr Souseh area, witnessed an exchange of gunfire, with reports of clashes between the Republican Guard and the Fourth Division. Local sources spoke of an attempt by Colonel Husam Luca to overthrow the president.
In terms of military operations, armed opposition groups seized vast areas in the north, with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham capturing 26 towns and cities in northern Hama countryside, in addition to strategic areas in Aleppo.
Uncertainty increased with the official Syrian TV network “SANA” suspending broadcasts and difficulty accessing the official news agency’s website. In contrast, the Iranian Tasnim News Agency denied rumors of a coup, affirming the stability of the situation in Damascus.
