The Moroccan National Coordination of Sports Journalism Associations has called on professional and affiliated journalists to fulfill their duties at the “Larbi Zaouli” Stadium in Casablanca, citing Article 28 of the 2011 Moroccan Constitution and Law No. 88.13 on press and publishing.
The coordination emphasized the need to recognize press cards issued by the National Press Council as the sole official document enabling journalists to carry out their duties, alongside official accreditations from media institutions for affiliates.
In its statement, the coordination stressed the importance of public authorities maintaining a neutral stance in regulating access to the stadium. It affirmed that any journalist with a valid legal document has the right to enter the stadium without harassment, warning that any actions preventing journalists from performing their duties could lead to legal accountability. A request has been submitted to the President of the Casablanca Civil Court of First Instance to appoint a judicial officer to monitor any actions violating the Constitution and relevant laws.
The coordination also criticized what it described as “restrictions” imposed by a business association on sports journalists, asserting that such practices undermine constitutionally and internationally guaranteed freedoms. Furthermore, it criticized the President of the National Professional Football League for alleged interference in journalists’ affairs, calling on him to focus on developing national football and addressing issues tarnishing its reputation.
The coordination announced its intention to notify the International and African Federations of Sports Journalism about the challenges faced by professional sports journalists in Morocco. It reiterated that the Moroccan judiciary remains the primary guarantor of journalists’ rights and freedoms in the face of any violations.
