In a public session at the Moroccan House of Representatives on Thursday, November 14, 2024, Fawzi Lekjaâ, the Minister Delegate for the Budget, confirmed that the Moroccan government is adopting a comprehensive approach to address the ongoing meat crisis in the country.
He stated that the measures aim to ensure the stability of the national market, meet the needs of citizens, and preserve their purchasing power, especially in light of the difficult economic conditions caused by the impacts of drought.
Lekjaâ pointed out that the government conducted an in-depth study to determine the necessary quantities of imported meat, and has exempted these imports from customs duties and VAT. This exceptional measure is intended to ensure that meat is available at reasonable prices. He emphasized that these measures are temporary and that the duties will be reimposed once the national livestock herd recovers.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of supporting small farmers with subsidized feed to ease their burden, as they are the backbone of the sector. He assured that the government is closely monitoring the slaughter of females to ensure a faster recovery of the national livestock in all its types.
Lekjaâ explained that the drought experienced by the kingdom has significantly affected agricultural production and pastures, further complicating livestock breeding. He assured that the government is aware of this challenge and is working on both urgent and strategic solutions to ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector and achieve food security.
In closing, Lekjaâ called on everyone to pray for rain to improve natural conditions, noting that improving the current situation requires the cooperation of all, including citizens and officials. He added that the government is committed to continuously monitoring the situation and making appropriate decisions at the right time to serve the national interest.
