During a significant session of the House of Councillors on November 20, 2024, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch outlined the Moroccan government’s vision for the development of the industrial sector. His address served as a comprehensive presentation of the government’s strategies aimed at strengthening national industry and achieving industrial sovereignty to support the national economy and create job opportunities, in line with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
In his speech, Akhannouch emphasized the pivotal role the industrial sector plays in the country’s economic and social growth. He stressed that manufacturing is one of the cornerstones of sustainable development, contributing significantly to the gross domestic product (GDP) and serving as a key driver for job creation and foreign currency reserves.
The Prime Minister reviewed a series of strategies launched under the wise leadership of His Majesty the King since 2005. He highlighted the “Industrial Revival Program” introduced in 2005 as a starting point for modernizing Morocco’s industrial sector. He also referred to the “National Industrial Revival Plan” of 2009 and the “Industrial Acceleration Plan” from 2014 to 2020, which notably enhanced the efficiency of the national industry, including the development of advanced infrastructure such as the Tangier Med Port, which is now the largest container port in Africa.
To support these ambitious strategies, Akhannouch mentioned the government’s initiative to establish new industrial zones, noting that over 13,600 hectares of industrial land have been invested in, and nearly 150 industrial zones have been created across the country. He also pointed out the development of new highways linking various industrial cities, further boosting Morocco’s regional and international competitiveness.
Akhannouch also addressed the global challenges facing the Moroccan economy, stressing the need for the national industry to adapt to these rapidly changing conditions. He referred to the royal message delivered by His Majesty King Mohammed VI during the National Industry Day in March 2023, which underscored the importance of entering “a new industrial era” and focusing on achieving national sovereignty in this sector.
Regarding investment projects, the Prime Minister highlighted that the Moroccan government has allocated a significant program to support investments in the industrial sector, particularly in the post-COVID-19 era. Akhannouch noted that the government had identified 1,864 industrial projects across the country, with total investments amounting to 119 billion dirhams, which is expected to create around 181,000 job opportunities.
Additionally, Akhannouch spotlighted the government’s efforts to accelerate industrial investment through the signing of 30 agreements related to industrial infrastructure, worth a total of 7.8 billion dirhams. He also mentioned the completion of 32 projects aimed at expanding industrial acceleration zones, which will add nearly 3% to the current industrial zone area.
In conclusion, Akhannouch expressed his strong belief in the importance of collaboration between the government, trade unions, entrepreneurs, and local authorities to ensure the success of national strategies aimed at fostering economic growth and creating employment opportunities.
