The Moroccan Minister of Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, has issued an urgent call for radical reform in the taxi sector, addressing the ongoing deterioration in service quality and numerous violations plaguing the industry.
In a circular addressed to governors and local authorities, the minister advocated for a more rigorous organization and practical measures aimed at meeting citizens’ needs and modernizing this essential service.
Laftit highlighted several key challenges, including:
- Aging vehicle fleet
- Non-compliance with official tariffs
- Unprofessional behavior of some drivers
The proposed reforms include:
- Updating regulations for taxi operation
- Enhancing supervision at taxi stations
- Strict implementation of meter usage and pricing rules
The minister also proposed initiatives to develop the taxi driver profession, through:
- Continuous training
- Improving customer communication skills
- Integrating modern technology in the sector
He emphasized the necessity of renewing the vehicle fleet by replacing old vehicles with modern, environmentally friendly ones.
