Informed sources told Hespress that Russia has dealt a new blow to Algeria’s efforts by excluding the “Polisario Front” from the first ministerial meeting of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum held in Sochi.
The sources confirmed that this decision represents a new setback for Algerian diplomacy, whose representatives in Sochi face a firm and clear Russian position. They indicated that Moscow continues its approach followed in the 2019 and 2023 Russia-Africa summits, where it reaffirms its rejection of separatism and internationally unrecognized entities.
The sources emphasized that Russia has never recognized the so-called “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic” and only deals with it as a party in a regional dispute. This position comes less than two weeks after the UN Security Council’s new resolution regarding the Moroccan Sahara.
It’s worth noting that this is not the first exclusion of the “Polisario” from international-African gatherings, as it was previously excluded from African partnership meetings with China and South Korea, as well as the Bali Forum.
On the sidelines of the conference, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita held bilateral talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, discussing bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest, before the closing ceremony of the ministerial conference that paves the way for the third Russia-Africa Summit.
