After an 11 month strike, Morocco’s Institution of the Ombudsman successfully brokered an agreement to resolve the crisis involving medical and pharmacy students. Early this morning, a settlement agreement was signed between the National Committee of Medical and Pharmacy Students, the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, and the Ministry of Health and Social Protection.
The agreement followed an online vote in which over 57% of students voted to suspend the strike, with a participation rate exceeding 90%.
The Institution of the Ombudsman announced the agreement, celebrating the success of its initiative to mediate the conflict and bring students back to their studies and clinical training, marking an end to the longest student strike in the nation’s history.
In a statement, the institution expressed appreciation for the positive and responsible engagement during the negotiations, underscoring the importance of trust among all parties to ensure the implementation of the agreement’s terms for the benefit of public medical education quality.
This settlement is seen as a turning point for medical education in Morocco, with the Ombudsman calling for continuous dialogue among all stakeholders to build trust and active collaboration, which are essential for stabilizing the educational environment and enhancing the quality of medical training at Moroccan universities.
