On Friday, November 1, 2024, the Republic of Sierra Leone reiterated its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative as a practical and credible solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. Addressing members of the United Nations Security Council, Sierra Leone highlighted the importance of this initiative, led by the Kingdom of Morocco under UN supervision, as a realistic framework for resolving the issue.
The country also called for the resumption of roundtable discussions among the involved parties to work toward a lasting political solution.
In a move that underscores this position, a parliamentary delegation from Sierra Leone visited Dakhla, Morocco, to observe the development progress in the Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab region. The visit aimed to explore avenues for cooperation and assess investment opportunities in this promising area, particularly in sectors like fisheries and tourism.
Known for its strategic location and rich natural and logistical resources, Dakhla has become one of Morocco’s leading economic destinations.
The Sierra Leonean delegation expressed admiration for the economic and social transformations taking place in Dakhla, and they commended the region’s infrastructure projects and facility improvements, which have made it an attractive destination for international investors.
They expressed interest in strengthening bilateral economic relations through partnership projects in the region’s vital sectors.
This visit is a step forward in the strong relationship between Morocco and Sierra Leone, reflecting Morocco’s policy of enhancing African-African cooperation based on solidarity and economic integration. Both countries aim to establish a solid foundation for partnerships across various fields to support mutual development, create job opportunities, and position Dakhla as a central hub for cooperation and investment in West Africa.
