Morocco Enhances High-Speed Rail Network with Alstom’s Avelia Horizon Trains

French company Alstom has announced the supply of its new generation high-speed train “Avelia Horizon TGV M” to Morocco, upgrading the high-speed rail network (LGV) extending to Marrakech.

The new train distinguishes itself as the world’s only double-deck high-speed train, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 320 kilometers per hour. It can accommodate up to 740 passengers in its 200-meter configuration, representing a 35% increase in capacity compared to previous generations, while achieving a 30% reduction in energy consumption per seat.

Morocco has ordered 12 trains with an option for an additional 6 units, marking a significant investment in railway infrastructure development. Deliveries are expected to begin in the coming years.

The new train features a modular design allowing for easy reconfiguration, wider doors for easier access, and an advanced interior design focused on passenger comfort. Its articulated architecture reduces the number of bogies required, significantly lowering maintenance costs.

This project comes as part of Morocco’s strategy to enhance its transport infrastructure and establish itself as a leader in high-speed rail travel in Africa. This development is expected to boost tourism by providing faster and more convenient access to major cities like Marrakech, contribute to economic growth by facilitating trade, while maintaining environmental sustainability thanks to its energy-efficient design.
