French newspaper “Libération” has revealed a tragic incident involving the murder of a Swiss tourist in the Algerian city of Djanet ten days ago, where she was killed while sitting at a café terrace.
The newspaper reported that Algerian authorities have maintained silence regarding this crime, imposing a complete media blackout on the incident, even on social media platforms. Two suspects have been arrested in the case, both men from the north of the country who had arrived six months ago wearing Tuareg clothing.
The method of execution raises concerns about terrorist motives, reminiscent of Algeria’s “Black Decade” during which 250,000 Algerians were killed by jihadist groups, which later moved to the Sahel region.
Djanet is located in the same border region that witnessed the In Amenas hostage crisis in 2013, which resulted in the death of approximately 40 foreigners during an Algerian military operation.
Although Algerian authorities promote Djanet, located near the Libyan border, as a major tourist destination, tourists there are subject to strict security measures, being monitored by plainclothes police officers. Special permission is required to leave hotels, as revealed by journalist Antoine de Maximy in his television program “I’m Going to Sleep at Your Place.”
