In a dramatic new development in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced on Thursday the “elimination” of Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, during a military operation in the area. This event is considered a significant blow to the Palestinian Islamic movement that Israel has been fighting for over a year.
Sinwar, 61, was considered one of the masterminds behind the unprecedented attack launched by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, which ignited the war in Palestinian territories and heightened tensions in the region. He had led Hamas in Gaza since 2017 and was appointed as the political head of the movement in early August following the death of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31 in an attack attributed to Israel.
Katz stated in a press release: “The mass murderer Yahya Sinwar, responsible for the massacres and atrocities on October 7, has been eliminated by Israeli soldiers.” Earlier, the Israeli army had announced the elimination of three “terrorists” during operations in Gaza, with an Israeli security source indicating that DNA analysis was being conducted on a body to confirm Sinwar’s identity.
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson described Sinwar’s death as a “source of hope,” while Hamas has not yet confirmed the news.
These developments come amid an explosive situation in the Middle East, where Israel has been bombing Hezbollah positions in Lebanon since September 23, after the group opened a cross-border front on October 8, 2023, in support of Hamas.
It’s worth noting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had stated after the October 7, 2023 attack: “Every Hamas member is a dead man.” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also wrote on X platform: “We will reach every terrorist and eliminate them.”
