On Tuesday, the United States reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, deeming it a “serious, credible, and realistic” solution to the regional conflict over Western Sahara.
This confirmation came in a statement from the U.S. Department of State following talks in Washington between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
A spokesperson for the State Department emphasized that “the United States continues to view the Moroccan autonomy plan as serious, credible, and realistic.”
In related discussions, both sides expressed their support for the personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura, in leading the political process concerning Western Sahara, which is being conducted under the auspices of the UN, with the aim of reaching a lasting political solution to the Western Sahara issue “without any delay.”
